What is Obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA)?
The word “Sleep apnoea” originates from the Greek language (Apnoia = windstill) and means a sleep-related- breathing disorder, that is attributed to chronic sleep disorders. According to the International Classification of Sleep Disorders (ICSD), until now 88 different chronic sleep disorders have been determined. The Sleep Apnoea Syndrome (SAS) has a greater share in this.

Essentially Sleep apnoea is respiratory arrest during sleep, which is not recorded by the affected person..These arrests or phases of apnoea occur in each person. If the duration of these apnoea phases are longer than ten seconds and occur very often as ten times per hour, then a check-up has to be carried out through inter-disciplinary medical experts.

There are three different forms of Sleep apnoea:

Obstructive sleep apnoea syndrome (SAS)
Hereby, the pharynx closes in such a way that no air and thereby no oxygen can go into the lungs.

Central sleep apnoea syndrome
In the sleep centre of the brain, an adverse reaction is initiated, which impedes an activating impulse to lungs and diaphragm. Hereupon the lungs and diaphragm stop their activity.

Mixed apnoea
This is the most common form of apnoea.

Why is a treatment for Obstructive sleep apnoea necessary?
The respiratory arrest can result into a permanent deficiency in the supply of oxygen to the body organs. The following symptoms can occur among others: Day time fatigue, micro sleep during day time, difficulty in concentration and unexplainable increase in weight.

An untreated sleep apnoea syndrome can lead to a reduced life expectancy, high blood pressure, cardiac arrhythmia, increase in weight, depressions, loss of libido and myocardial infarction. Car accidents frequently occur due to lack of concentration. Fortunately Sleep Apnoea Syndrome can be reliably diagnosed with the modern techniques available these days and treated successfully.
